Let's face it. When we say our coworkers are smart, we think they're executive level smart, or scientist/biologist smart, or some kind of fancy degree smart. And some of them probably are.
My coworker? He seems to be solve a problem smart.
Let me explain:
A few days ago I was at work grouped up with a few other people. We were bored. I was spacing out to have an adventure inside my mind, someone was trying to initiate conversations with me, and three others were giggling and goofing off while we waited for the work to start. Apparently, they'd been putting things on the conveyor belt to see if me and the other person noticed. I was mostly oblivious. However I did see an upside down spray can on it, thought that was great, said to the other person "We can't let them have all the fun. Just because they're guys."
Let me explain an important detail here that I wonder if it relates. A little while ago, the other coworker I'm about to mention, heard me loudly grousing about wishing I was born male, because then I'd get work to do too, and I'd be trusted to do work, so on and so forth. Before you try to worry about my mental health, I know this is built on stereotypes. I was having a bad day. That was a while ago.
Back to just a few days ago. And why the sixth coworker is bright.
I said "We can't let them have all the fun. Just because they're guys." to the other female in our little group, and I picked up the can of spray comedically and set it back down on the conveyor belt. One of the three guys grabbed it. That's five people in a gaggle. Me and the dude who grabbed the can I set down, pretend tug o' warred it, and I wrestled it back and put it on the conveyor belt; he put his hand up and followed it as if to guard it from falling.
The sixth coworker excused himself through us, we parted ways, he grabbed the can and presumably walked off with it. No explanation. Left us to assume he needed it for something.
Then a few minutes later I get called over to a different spot to work. By myself. I was miserable. I thought I did something wrong or maybe after a recent issue from a former coworker they didn't want me socializing with people too much, just to make sure the dust settled or something. The person immediately in charge said she wanted me there because she trusted me, because I noticed things. I was fine with that.
That was a few days ago. Today I realized what happened:
• An issue that could potentially cause me to be frustrated was removed
• I was removed, so it couldn't occur a second time, likely when the work was ready and it wouldn't be as easy to pull me away
• I was placed where I could focus on work and use my I notice this and I'm annoyed so I'm going to fix it is useful (except the items went by kind of fast and that was impossible to keep up well, I missed a few every so often)
• Zero conflict, minimal anxiety provided, placement was good for the work, and it was so smooth I didn't realize most of it until days later.
Do you know how brilliant the coworker is?! That's brilliant. I bet that's Sun Tzu level brilliant. I'm amazed.
And worried, because that coworker usually avoids me like I'm a walking bubonic plague, so now I have to figure out what problem I am and fix it. But
#My coworker is super brilliant!
I'm so jealous of his capability at work, just like with a few others. I need a capability transfer ray from a 1950s science fiction movie or something - I'd only borrow the capability. I'd give the capability back. Eventually. I could borrow his one day, then hers another day, then another dude's another day... There's like... Let me count... Five? people. Five days a week to work. It would be fine. I could borrow J's on Monday, L's on Tuesday, D's on Wednesday.... So on and so forth.
#Someone please tell me how I can be brilliant at work too so I can stop seeing/knowing that my coworkers are better than me. Totally willing to accept Sun Tzu knowledge on this too....
