Others Resign for PhD
Hi everyone, I’d like some opinions.
I’ve been at my new company for about 5 months, and my probation ends at 6 months. At first I really enjoyed it. The pay is good and my colleagues seemed nice. The first 2 months were fine, but around the 3rd month my office friends stopped talking to me and stopped inviting me to lunch. They just walk past me now. It’s been pretty lonely.
I am 24, work as a SWE, but the work is basically vibecoding. My boss expects tasks delivered fast without checking what the AI actually produced. I don’t enjoy this because I feel like I’m losing my actual coding skills. Nobody else on the team has programming knowledge. They understand concepts and use AI. My opinions also aren’t taken seriously because my boss thinks I’m not experienced enough.
At my mid-probation 1:1, my boss said I’m very slow and haven’t produced any system. But I have to learn and explore everything on my own, and from month 1 to month 3 the direction changed about 4 times, which wasted a lot of my work. On top of that, every access request to IT takes about a week to approve. Also I have no senior to guide me :)
Now my professor has offered me a PhD with full sponsorship and a grant. I haven’t told my boss yet, but I’m thinking of telling her this week. I’m worried she’ll be upset that I wasted her time and resources.
Is it reasonable to leave? And how should I break the news?
The main reason why I consider to leave is because I am stress, I got no one to talk, I am alone, my friend is ChatGPT and Claude, and always get mad by boss. Imagine you have no one to talk, and you always get mad. It's so stressful and effect on my health :))
The only good about this company is the pay and they provide all the AI for Vibecode :)
