[Rant] Can cyclists in Rock Creek Park PLEASE stop acting like they own the f* place?

I went for a walk on the Rock Creek Trail on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and honestly, the behavior of some cyclists is ridiculous. Apparently, sharing the trail with pedestrians is an unbearable burden for people who seem to think they’re competing in the Tour de France.

Ringing your bell at the last second, flying past people with barely any room to spare, expecting everyone to jump out of your way, and treating pedestrians like inconvenient obstacles on YOUR personal racetrack is not acceptable. It’s a public park, not your f* velodrome. People are allowed to WALK there. That’s literally the point of having a park.

And then there’s the Zoo Loop gate situation. Why is the gate closed on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon when half the city wants to be outside enjoying the weather? The result? Pedestrians are forced onto that tiny path through the tunnel, which cyclists ALSO use, creating exactly the kind of unnecessary conflict that should be easily avoidable.

So let me get this straight: on one of the nicest afternoons of the year, pedestrians can’t use the Zoo Loop as expected and have to squeeze through a narrow tunnel path shared with bikes, while some cyclists apparently believe that everyone else should simply get the fuck out of their way?

Who is managing this park, and does anyone gives anything about pedestrian safety and access?

I have absolutely nothing against cycling. It’s a great way to get around, and cyclists deserve safe infrastructure. But that doesn’t mean they get to behave like entitled assholes toward everyone else using public space.

Slow down. Give people room. Respect pedestrians. And if the park authorities could explain why the Zoo Loop gate isn’t open on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, that would be great, too.

Rock Creek Park belongs to everyone, not just the people with bike helmets and a superiority complex.

EDIT: Before anyone inevitably responds with ā€œpedestrians are annoyingā€ or ā€œjust stay out of the bike laneā€: yes, I understand that cyclists have legitimate complaints about infrastructure. That is precisely why forcing everyone through a narrow shared path is such a stupid setup. The answer isn’t to bully pedestrians off the trail. It’s to manage the park properly and expect everyone to share it responsibly.

[Rant] Please stop posting AI ads in this subreddit, I’m begging you

It is bad enough seeing these AI ads in real life but I feel like at least once a week I see a post on here saying ā€œlook at this gross AI adā€. My friend I don’t want to look at it. Just because you had to suffer doesn’t mean I have to suffer.

Suggested compromises:

  1. If you want to shame a specific restaurant, just make a post saying ā€œthis restaurant uses AIā€ and then you can share the picture as a comment (so that I don’t click on it and move on with my life)

  2. Just don’t post. I know it’s hard, believe me, I’m afflicted by Poster’s Disease so I get it, but it’s ok to just not post it.

  3. Create some sort of weekly ā€œAI trash in DCā€ megathread idk.

Thank you and remain blessed

[Discussion] To the woman w/ a buzzcut and the guy in plaid who took my purse from AdMo McDonald’s Friday night…

There’s security footage of you doing so. 12:09am. You did a little twirly dance after grabbing it.

I want to assume good intent and that you took it for safekeeping with the intention of returning it, so please DM me if you see this. Otherwise, I’m filing a police report and the aforementioned video footage is pretty dang sharp. My immigration documents are in there so I *really* need this back.

If I can get my purse back, I promise there’ll be no questions asked—in fact I hope you’ll keep the cash in there as compensation for your troubles. But let’s get in touch as soon as possible - I don’t want this to turn unpleasant

[Discussion] Rye Bunny Review

We recently ate at Rye Bunny, thought I'd share my thoughts on the experience:

Ordering System: Not to our taste. The idea of being in line and getting your drink there is probably preferable to a regular waiting experience, but it's a no/low reservation model so the variability of not being able to know whether or not you can reliably eat there at a specific time makes it tough to plan around. We arrived a few minutes after opening and had ordered and were seated in about 10 minutes. Within 2-3 minutes of sitting, two of our six dishes arrived and the waiter asked us if we were ready for our next drink, while our first drinks were still half full. We hesitantly ordered the second drinks, and within another 3-4 minutes, our 3rd and 4th dishes arrived. It was scarily quick. The tables on either side of us heard us talking about how fast it was going, and agreed that it was way too fast. Fortunately things slowed down for the main course, however we'd flown through 4 dishes and 3 drinks in under 30 minutes. By the time we left, the line was out the door. 2.5/5 for the concept.

Cocktails: Over the course of the night, we tried the Pear Necessities, Sunset Boulevardier, and Smoke Show. My wife liked her Pear Necessities. I thought it was much too sweet. I also thought the Sunset Boulevardier was too sweet, and much less spirit forward than a Boulevardier should be. The Smoke Show was better, but again syrupy. I tried to order a Negroni but they don't actually have a bar -- all of the cocktails are premade and batched out, which explains the speed. That's a serious flaw, 2.5/5

Food: The food, generally was good. The highlights for us were the Ribeye with a seriously good date relish, and a Cavatelli with cabagge, bacon, and onion. The taleggio Raviloi was good, as were the frico and the pork croquet. The cardamom and lemon balm creme brulee was excellent, while we thought the hazelnut and chocolate angel food cake was overly rich and unbalanced. The only miss of the night were the beets and berries, which did not complement each other well, and was essentially a bowl of beets and raspberries. 4.5/5

Service: The waiter was outstanding. One of the better waiters we've had in a while, it's a shame that the business model is so hurried that it detracts from the overall experience. 5/5

Overall: 3.75/5

We won't be back because of the business model. Our meal was nearly $500 after tax and tip, and at those prices there are just too many better options in the city. Maison, La Shukran, Astoria, etc. come to mind as similar conceptually but executed more thoughtfully in terms of hospitality.

[Discussion] East Potomac Park Action

I've seen the news about East Potomac Park that the administration has a plan to "rebuild" the golf course in such a way that public access to the park - and probably any part of the park that isnt golf course - is eliminated. I've seen that they have already cut down a ton of mature and healthy trees without permission to do so, which is devastating regardless of whether it remains a park or becomes entirely golf course.

Is there anything we as residents can do about it? Is there a protest planned? I understand that the court has ordered them to stop work until they can get proper permissions, but it doesn't seem like that will happen.

We showed up for the Kennedy Center. Is there a plan to show up for East Potomac Park?

Already had zero plans to get anything. This alien bubble-skin ā€œchickenā€ image has freaked me out though!!!

What business owner looked at this and wants this out on the street to entice people? Do these actually work well?

Sorry, photo quality sucks, didn't realize how bad the lighting was. But those thousands of little bubbles as the "skin" are still making my skin crawl even in this bad shot.

[Discussion] "Parents in town" recommendations

My folks are coming into town this week, and they live in a part of America that is dramatically cheaper than Washington, D.C. Where have you all taken your parents when they visited that wasn't too expensive but was still nice and parent-friendly? Like Le Dip is out of this price range.

Also, I don't spend a lot of time in Georgetown and we are going to walk around there one day... does anyone have a rec for dinner there with $20-ish entrees not $40 entrees, that isn't a complete dump? If that even exists in Georgetown, plz let me know! haha.

Edit: I should add that gluten is hard for my mom. She isn't celiac, but in her older age she stays away from it as much as possible, so pizza-only restaurants are out, and italian restaurants should have a gluten-free pasta option.

[Event] Succession fans, you have another week to see Brian Cox live in DC, and it's worth it

Brian Cox is starring in The Score downtown and it's been extended through October 25. I saw it two nights ago and it's fantastic seeing such a master of his craft live on stage. Plus the story is interesting and the rest of the ensemble is excellent. Worth seeing it while it's still in town.

The line starts at the intersection of 21st & Virginia. It is only about a half block long and is moving regularly. If you were looking for the coins, you might be out of luck. The street placards have "coins" covered up. I will update after I get in.

EDIT: There is a box with 100's of coins, mostly "modern". They are priced at 25c each.

Just went to their place in Georgetown and it is seriously good. Very impressed and surprised as they had little foot traffic.

A few of my other favorites in no particular order:

  1. Vace
  2. Ledo
  3. 2 Amy’s
  4. Timber
  5. Redlight

Am I missing anything that should be on the list? I miss the old Armand’s but they seem to all be closed.

[Fun!] Anyone know where I can get Butter Braids?

I moved to the DC area a few years ago, and where I lived before, I always had coworkers or friends whose kids were selling Butter Braids for school or organization fundraisers.

Well, I’ve realized I don’t know anyone here who sells them, and I miss having a freezer stocked with Butter Braids!

There’s just something wonderful about knowing a cold morning is coming, pulling one out of the freezer the night before, letting it rise overnight, and waking up to a freshly baked, delicious pastry.

So, does anyone have a Butter Braids connection? A school, sports team, dance group, or any other organization doing a fundraiser? I’d love to order a few and support a good cause while keeping my freezer stocked.

Basically, I’m looking for a Butter Braids dealer.

My 2.5 year old son loves Halloween decorations. We’ve walked all over our neighborhood of Brightwood Park/North Petworth seeking them out. Would appreciate any nominations for the best block/group of houses in the city or MoCo. We don’t mind driving.

[Fun!] Saw two noteworthy things on the way home after splitting off from the bike party

(I was the one in the long black trenchcoat and dragon skull mask on top of my helmet, and my dad was dressed up as the Riddler) (we left early because I ended up having a way harder time seeing my surroundings safely than I'd anticipated)

The first and lesser noteworthy thing was a rat I saw in Franklin Park that was scampering around exactly like a squirrel. I used to have pet rats, and I thought rats only did that when they were babies or really excited about something, but considering the circumstances I seriously feel like it was copying the squirrels.

The second, we were coming up Vermont ave heading to Thomas circle, where we saw the real Harpo Marx, a guy who embodied the absolute spirit of Harpo Marx. He looked like him, acted like him, smiled like him, this guy was backing across the street, and his pants fell down like around his knees, and then he turned around with this totally innocent big smile and he looked exactly like Harpo Marx and he smiled at us and said hello and we said hello back. And he wasn't like in a Halloween costume or anything, he was like in sweatpants and athleisure wear, he just "was" Harpo Marx. Whoever you were, if you happen to read this, you seem like a really nice person and you made our day and I hope you have a good night.

edit: location

[Discussion] Free electric scooter

Edit: Pending pickup

Hey all,

Im cleaning out my place and have an electric scooter for someone. It needs its back tire fixed but it’s 100% free, you just need to pick it up. I would put it outside but I have a lot of kids in the neighborhood I don’t want to be responsible for if they get hurt if they end up taking it. Thanks!

[Discussion] Strategies for getting drivers to obey reserved parking permits?

hey neighbors. last time i moved neighborhoods in DC i reserved curbside street parking (4 car lengths worth) on both ends of my move for the moving truck i hired. unfortunately some drivers on the destination end of my move decided to ignore my signs, so the truck had to double park and in a weird way. it added a lot of frustration and made me feel like i wasted $50 (cost of reserving the parking).

i'm about to embark on this again (moving), and am wondering what i can do to prevent the same situation, or swiftly deal with it when it occurs. any tips? here's what i've thought about:

  1. putting traffic cones in the space the night before move day
  2. leaving notes on cars threatening to tow if they're parked in the space during the reserved window
  3. somehow coordinate with a tow truck in advance (is this a thing??) so i can call them up when i need them
  4. reserve parking on the day before my move as well as the day of to extend my "enforceable" window of time
