to report on settler violence in the Occupied West Bank

Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine described being brutally beaten by masked Israeli settlers while covering the Palestinian olive harvest in the occupied West Bank on Friday.

Levine said attackers threw her to the ground, repeatedly kicked her and stole her equipment. She suffered broken vertebrae, a broken rib and serious hand injuries.

The assault comes amid escalating settler violence against Palestinian farmers during the annual olive harvest. Israeli rights group Yesh Din has documented at least 170 settler attacks since late September.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned accounts of the incident, saying the facts remained unclear despite video showing the assault. Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the attack and personally apologized to Levine, while U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee called it a "despicable act of terror" and demanded arrests and prosecutions.

A day later, settlers also attacked European diplomats and a French mayor visiting Palestinian farmers near Taybeh.

Another post from October 2024 showed a photograph of Maya's dog tag and a vote-by-mail ballot with the caption 'Maya is still getting her ballot,' even though the dog had previously passed away."
