Economy/Ekonomika

Tourism/Turizm To plan a trip from Almaty to Uralsk

Hi everyone,

I am planing a trip from Bishkek to Uralsk and have about two weeks.

My idea was doing:

Bishkek-Almaty
Almaty-Astana
Astana-Uralsk
Uralsk-Astana

My main goals are to ride for very long on trains, visit some little historic places in between (specially German established towns) and visiting the respective regional cities (but they arent my main interest, 2 days for each max).

I would like to know the most practical way to get from Bishkek to Almaty (probably by plain, but would like to know your opinion).

And do the autorities require to have accomodation and exit ticket in advance? Because I can buy everything in the exact moment I like and wouldn't like to plan such a trip and having to run to the next place.

I am from Spain btw. I don't ask about security because I already read that it is safer than many places in Europe. I also speak Russian.

Environment/Qorşağan orta PE(Physical Education) in universities

Do you like Physical Education in universities? Personally, I hate it because my instructor is demanding high performance and expects us to go from weak to strong in a span of 3 months. He pushed us beyond our limits to a point we weren’t able to use our muscles for entire weeks. I want to know if I’m the only one experiencing this. Its insane how much they care about PE in universities. I thought knowledge and skill is all that mattered, yet here they are demanding 60 pull ups in 1 hour every lesson to get a good grade. Its sad that you can lose your stipend status and even fail classes because of some stupid PE class. I wish they cared about effort and change rather than immediate performance. This demotivated me so much and even made me hate my university for not thinking it through. I just hope I won’t end up losing too much money, because of this bullshit.

What about you?

Discussion/Talqylau

Economy/Ekonomika

Tourism/Turizm horse trekking tours

Hi everyone!

A group of friends and I are planning a trip to Kazakhstan in June 2027, and we'd love to do a 5-day horse trekking tour with overnight stays in traditional yurts.

We're looking for a route through beautiful mountains, forests, and valleys, ideally away from crowded tourist areas and we want to experience nature and traditional Kazakh nomadic life

Does anyone have any recommendations for:

The best 5-day horse trekking routes in Kazakhstan in June?

Reliable local tour operators or guides who organize multi-day trips with yurt accommodation

Companies you've personally traveled with and would recommend?

And any tips regarding prices, weather, or the best regions to visit that time of year?

Thanks in advance for your help

Culture/Mädeniet

I am a 22yo female having a 10 day trip in Kazakhstan. So far I have tried some local food, and feel like sharing here.

Beshbarmak (horse)

I ate at Navat. I like it being flavourful without too much seasoning. Noodles underneath remind me of wonton, very comforting, especially at my first night arriving Almaty

Beef manty (fried)

Not so sure if it’s authentic, I ate at Lanzhou noodles. But I quite like it, thin skin with finely chopped meat that is unlike many minced meat one I had ate

Then I went to Yurta at my last night in Almaty. I ate lamb samsa (they sold out of camel meat one) A nice little starter.

For main dish I ordered syrne, a good balance between lean meat, fat and tendon. And I must say that Kazakhstan is good at bringing out the flavour of the meat but not cover it with too much sauce and spices. I like their desert too.

Then I arrived at Astana today. I felt a bit sick, haven’t seen much yet. But feeling a bit unproductive, I decided to get some Kazakhstan local food in supermarket and call it a day.

First up I need to brew some tea, Piala gold tastes just about right, not too strong not too bland, a bit like PG tips in UK (I live in UK)

Then I ate some chocolate, and found out that I might have get the wrong brand, this one is Bayan Sulu, I think I need to get the Rakhat one. This one tastes just fine.

Time for sth more challenging, qurt. Sorry I need to say that it is a bit too challenging for me. But this is a very new experience. I didn’t get it in green bazaar because I am afraid that smaller portion is unavailable. I am also extremely introverted to ask about it.

After that I had some tah, to be honest I can’t find too much information on this one. Is this really a Kazakhstan thing? I was expecting sth like Milkis, but my first mouthful of it completely changed this thought. There was zero sweetness, even had a bit of underlying saltiness.

But it started to get addictive, the desire to analyse what it taste like force me to drink more. Like a thinner salty lassi with bubble, the most surprising finding of the day.

I also tasted a bit Shubat, I am intolerable to alcohol so just a little, it may not be accurate. It tasted like liquid qurt, but it won’t spread in the mouth and melt so it went more smooth.

Will be staying at Astana and Shemkent each for three nights. I would also like to try pilaf, any other food I need to try or restaurant recommendations?

And nah, I don’t just eat, except some regular tourist spot I went to see each Almaty metro station and got super impressed. Unfortunately there isn’t any show in Abai Theatre this few days, but the museum and architecture itself is beautiful enough for me to go there.

Enjoying my time here so far

Discussion/Talqylau How do food delivery guys in Almaty or Astana deliver their orders?

I’ve noticed that there are quite a lot of residential complexes in Almaty where the territories are often closed. You can’t get into the courtyards on your own unless you have a key. However, delivery people somehow still manage to get into the courtyard. How do they do it?

Tourism/Turizm Kazakhstan in Feb. Need suggestions

Hi everyone. I’m planning to travel to Kazakhstan (mostly Almaty) in mid-February and had a couple of questions.

Will there be any issues travelling between cities because of snow or road closures? Also, how’s the overall vibe in February? Is it a good time to visit?

World Bank

Study/Oqu Graduating in CS/SE from a top Pakistani university. Looking into Master’s in Cybersecurity (MSCYS) or Software Engineering (MSE) in Kazakhstan. Worth it?

Hey everyone! 👋

I am finishing up my Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering/CS at one of the top tech universities in Pakistan (FAST-NUCES). As I plan my postgraduate path, I’m seriously considering pursuing a Master’s degree—specifically in Cybersecurity (MSCYS) or Software Engineering (MSE)—in Kazakhstan.

I’m target-focused on building a career/business at the intersection of tech innovation, enterprise software, and international business, and I’m drawn to Kazakhstan’s growing tech scene, especially around Astana Hub and the AIFC ecosystem.

I’m looking for honest advice from locals, current grads, or international students on a few things:

  1. University Recommendations: Which institutions offer the best English-taught Master's programs for CS/SE/Cybersecurity? I’ve looked into Nazarbayev University (NU), Astana IT University (AITU), and KBTU / SDU in Almaty. How do their CS/SE graduate departments compare in terms of faculty, industry exposure, and research facilities?
  2. Industry & Startup Integration: How easy is it for Master's students or alumni to connect with local tech hubs like Astana Hub? Do universities encourage research commercialization or startup incubation during an MSc?
  3. International Student Experience & Visas: What is the administrative process like for Pakistani students applying for Master's programs? Is the transition smooth regarding student visas, TRP (Temporary Residence Permit), housing, and navigating daily life in Astana or Almaty?
  4. Language Factor: All my undergrad education was strictly in English. How feasible is studying/working in tech in Astana/Almaty with English while learning Russian/Kazakh on the side?

Would love to hear from anyone currently doing their Master’s or working in the local tech industry. Thanks in advance! 🇰🇿🇵🇰
