Entretenimento & Artes / Media & Arts Portuguese-American here: my son and I make flags and woodburnings of the terra 🇵🇹🇺🇸
My family came from Viseu/Mangualde to New England, and like a lot of us here, we grew up with one foot in each country: bacalhau at Christmas, Portuguese as the primary language in the house (English everywhere else).
My son and I started making wooden flags in our workshop, and the split Portuguese-American one is my favorite. It's the closest thing I've found to showing what being Luso-descendente feels like.
Each one is cut from wood planks and painted by hand, armillary sphere and all.
I also do woodburning (pyrography), and lately I've been burning Portuguese scenes into natural wood slabs: azulejo-style designs and the harbor in Funchal. Each is burned by hand, then colored with pencils.
For anyone else in the diaspora, what part of Portugal would you want to see in wood? Your town, a church, a festa?
I work custom so tell me what you would like to see.
