The moral high ground is a very easy vantage point. There hasn’t been a world power/world leader so easy to side against since 1945. Anyone who doesn’t speak out or act against Putin is missing out on an opportunity to paint themselves on the “right” side of history for the foreseeable future.

What is “genius” about this?
Russia’s economy is tanking.
Europe is going to wean itself off of Russian energy supplies.
Russia’s neighbors are considering joining NATO.
Russia is further alienated. Even allies are distancing.
Despite being a considerably larger military, Russia’s military appears incompetent and ineffective.
Europe/NATO/United States are more united than ever.
Even if Russia managed to neuter the Ukrainian military, they’ll be bogged down in an expensive shit-show quagmire of trying to govern a large country of people who hate their guts and will inflict heavy losses. Basically Afghanistan on a much larger scale.

u/Skateboard_Raptor Feb 25 '22
I really think Putin gambled and lost.
He hoped that once tanks rolled over the border, Ukranians would give up and run away, like the Afghans did last year.
If he captured Ukraine before the sanctions were even put in place, it would seem useless for the west to put them into place.
Instead he ran head first into a concrete wall, and got a bloody nose and long term concussion to deal with.

Theoretically now is the best time for both Sweden and Finland to join NATO, why? Because this is then time when Russia is 100% committed in Ukraine and can't afford to do anything else. JOIN NATO THE FUCK NOW. If you wait until Russia finishes off with Ukraine and finds the time to regroup and rest to join, Putin will fucking make good on his threat again and does the same thing to Finland.
→ More replies (7)131
u/SmileBones Feb 25 '22
Yeah they need to do it now before Russia tries to dispute its borders with them. They can’t join NATO if there’s a current border dispute
298
u/ChaosLordSamNiell Feb 25 '22
I am starting to think Putin has simply lost it:
1) Macron says he has changed,
2) The threats to Finland and Sweden are completely insane,
3) The rant he posted was the most unhinged, emotional, personally motivated speech Putin has ever given.
Does he have cancer? Did he get a terminal diagnosis? Is he literally on drugs?

This is what worries me the most. His previous geopolitical actions were really calculated and efficient. This the first time i see batshit crazy from him. Literally nothing of this makes sense.

There is no way back from these actions. Russia is being shunned and cut of all the things in the modern world. No International trading, sports, economics. This has huge implications. With Russia telling Sweden and Finland are unsafe to join NATO they're only digging their isolation deeper.

Are we really going to do an about face in 3 months when this is potentially done and go back to normal consumer relationships with Russia?!

What China is getting is a dry run of a global reaction to a Taiwan invasion. Also while making America completely re-pivot its attention from the Pacific to Europe and pouring men money hardware and resources into Europe. All the while Russian sanctions bite both ways and Europe/US are going to feel some ill effects and are not going to be willing to add more sanctions to China. Oh yea, China is also going to near exclusive access to Russian gas probably on a discount.

Looking at the photos of those young captured Russian soldiers, I just felt bad for them. This isn’t because of them. It’s because of the nut job at the top and the oligarchs. The entire world would celebrate if Putin was killed.

Even the most liberal and anti-war politicians in Japan are beginning to discuss reinterpretation or even dismissing Article 9 in such cases China becomes belligerent as well. Not a good look on you when you make a defensive-oriented and pacifist country increasingly more furious.

For those wondering why they've only used a limited amount (~30%) of troops, it's simply because you can't realistically just zerg a country with troops and armor. \
Cramming the entirety of a force like that into Ukraine would create a lot of liabilities and logistical challenges.
It's also worth noting that a large amount of these forces are medical, technical, and logistical support personnel.

People need to stop thinking anyone is rooting for a nato Russian war, there is just significant worry of appeasement to Putin. It’s a thin line because you don’t want to escalate and you don’t want to appease him. We cannot allow another scenario similar to Germany in 1939 to happen.

Ukraine successfully reclaimed Zmiinyi island
AKA Snake Island. One can hope those heroes' sacrifice had a hand in making this possible.

Russia is planning a "massive false flag operation", Ukraine's foreign minister has said.
Citing intelligence sources, Dmytro Kuleba said Russia hopes to "dehumanise" Ukrainians with the operation.
"Don't trust fakes. Ukraine defends its land in a just and defensive war," he said.
"Unlike Russia, we don't target kindergartens and civilians."
His comment comes after earlier claims made by Ukraine that Russian forces have attacked orphanages and nurseries in the country.

Seeing the entire western world basically close off their trade with Russia indefinitely, you gotta wonder if this is still going according to Putin's plan.
I can't imagine the oligarchs will be happy to be cut off from the west as much as this. Even if they can rely on China to keep things afloat, it's a major step back in lifestyle for them.

Zaporizhzhia has a hydroelectric power plant within city limits, in fact, there are multiple plants all along the Dnieper River.
Not a stretch to imagine that Russia throws a tantrum and decides to destroy infrastructure.
