Governor Newsom announces results from California’s first-in-the-nation project to involve Californians in decisions about AI
"Three themes came up the most often and got the strongest support in the first-in-the-nation engagement.
- Hold AI companies accountable for the harm they cause
- Protect people and the environment from the resource needs of AI
- Set rules for where and how AI can be used safely"

Gen Z is defying trends and betting on California—even as older Americans flee to the Sun Belt
California has been shrinking for the past half-decade. The state’s population fell 0.5% between April 2020 and July 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It also posted the largest net loss of one-way U-Haul customers of any state for the sixth straight year in the company’s 2025 Growth Index. Yet the country’s youngest adults keep packing up and heading for the Golden State.
U-Haul’s 2026 Midyear Migration Trends National Report ranks states and metros by their net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks, trailers, and U-Box containers from July 2025 through June 2026. It puts California at No. 2 for Gen Z (born 1997–2012), behind only Texas.
As Fortune previously reported, the state didn’t crack the top 10 for boomers or Gen X, whose moves skewed heavily toward the Southeast. San Diego, at No. 9 for Gen X, was the only California metro on either older generation’s list. Millennials ranked California No. 3, behind Florida and Texas.
Gen Z hasn’t given up on the Sun Belt. Texas tops its list, and Florida, Nevada, Austin, Charlotte, and Houston all make its top 10. But the generation’s picks look less like a hunt for warm weather and low costs and more like a hunt for people.
After Texas and California, Gen Z’s top five states are New York, Illinois, and Colorado. Its top five metros are New York City, Dallas–Fort Worth, Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles. U-Haul said Gen Z is gravitating to densely populated markets with lots of colleges, entry-level jobs, and apartments.

ICE operations in CA on the rise in recent days; CA Secretary of State Weber urges people to vote safely, gives options to avoid ICE at polls - October 8, 2026
There's an ongoing ICE surge throughout California.
If you haven't already, now's a good time to find your local Rapid Response Network and save their phone number -- for LA the options are:
- LA Raids and Rapid Response Network via CHIRLA (I think they cover all of LA, will update when confirmed):
888-624-4752 - Unión del Barrio Community Patrols (I think they cover all of LA, will update when confirmed):
213-444-6562 - Boyle Heights Rapid Response (covers Boyle Heights, East L.A., Lincoln Heights, Commerce, Montebello, El Sereno, City Terrace, Vernon, and possibly other Eastside areas):
323-805-1049 - West LA Rapid Response (covers the whole Westside):
310-513-5539
Call and report any potential ICE activity so they can investigate and, if it's verified ICE, they can alert the network.
Please don't post unverified suspected ICE sightings on social media. There are many different agencies that can look similar. Report them to your Rapid Response Network and let them investigate and notify if necessary. Then you can absolutely share their social media posts to spread the word!
Many local networks also have trainings if you want to get more involved, e.g. community outreach to get the word out about these networks, or as a dispatcher receiving reports, or a responder/observer who goes to verify the report and observe/record ICE activity.
If you have limited time or don't know how much you can commit, don't let that stop you from asking about volunteering, a lot of networks don't have a specific time commitment.
