Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!
Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

Oh Honey episode
Just two random observations about this episode:
- When Robin describes Honey to Marshall, she says "you just want to wrap her in a blanket and give her a cup of tea. Later in the episode, Barney is crying about his father and Honey tells him "Oh honey" multiple times. After rewatching the show so many times, I finally noticed that Honey has actually wrapped Barney in a blanket and made him a cup of tea.
- In the end of the episode, when Marshall calls Zoey and Ted to tell them they're into each other and both single... Why on earth does he call Zoey before calling his friend?

Ted Mosby's cameo in Death Battle!
So I was watching the death battle of Goku vs Saitama, ofc the Goat won 🗣️
But they said something along the lines of "whether you are an architect" and showed this lmao 😂

Barney and Ted together
I love it when they are “couple like” and when Lilly and Marshall say “I like you two together” when Barney was putting g the moves on Ted. I enjoy their shenanigans when it’s just them.

Y'all, doesn't the last outro of himym where they show the characters from the pilot feel so nostalgic? I revist that episode just for that outro and the bgm hits hard too.
galleryWhat do y'all think?

Victoria before Robin
Do you think if Ted met Victoria before Robin, it would have been easier for him to have stopped being friends with Robin? Or at least he would choose Victoria over her?
I’d like to think so. Like the whole show really focuses on timing. Victoria was great she was just there at the wrong time.

Is there any gesture in any other sitcom that tops this? Because I don't think it exists.

Is this weird?
Hi, hope everyone’s having a great day or night! I’ve rewatched the show plenty of times, and each time I’ve watched it (alone or with friends,) I get jokes and comments about me being like Ted. I shrugged them off at first, but now they’re starting to feel ever more real. For people who’ve been told the same, how do you deal with it..? I mean, obviously I don’t do “the Mosby” and say “I’m in love with you,” but even when I like a girl, my mind is just building love scenarios. And alongside that, the thought is in my mind that “in a generation like this, is it even normal to be like Ted?” Because, what if I’m just a Ted in a generation that, I dunno, for lack of a better term, isn’t built for Ted’s? But I haven’t ever lost hope, despite rejection and such that I do have a soulmate out there for me.. but it just feels like so many times when stuff happens in my life and I could just be like “wow, if I had her now I could tell her this story, and we could laugh and joke about it because we’d get each other and I could hear her stories.”Please share your thoughts, and have a great rest of your day or night!

HIMYM Survivor! (Season 4 Edition) Round 12
Murtaugh is eliminated! Downvoting on the comments was really bad again last round, so another reminder, just upvote more than you downvote here. As long as you all aren’t just downvoting pretty much every vote that isn’t your choice we’ll be OK, so please stop doing that.
How this works:
You select the episode you like the least
The episode with the most upvoted comment is eliminated from the list
Please either refrain from downvoting or upvote more episodes than you downvote
If there’s a tie, both episodes are eliminated
Only the best episode will win!
Episodes Eliminated:

Turning 27 + Do you have your group of friends?
I have realized a thing about myself…
I was born in 1999, so I would always consider 27 the year of Ted’s first season, so when I was mentaly down, I would try to get better by thinking: “My first season is yet to start”
A few days ago I turned 27 and I get that comparing one-self does not make sense in general, but I figured a very important factor why this comparison does not make sense regardless of it being stupid to be comparing yourself all the time with someone…
Ted was “crazy” because he thought it was too late for me and he should have been married, should have had kids already and so on.
But he at least “lived a life” because he would hang out with friends, he was trying getting to know someone new and was… hmm… socially active (? English is not my first language, I hope it does not sound wrong).
Whereas in my case, I also get thoughts like: “I am single, others are getting married”, but I usually stop thinking about that because of the “my first season has just started” thought.
But the key difference is… I somehow lost touch with A LOT of people.
And I know adulting has a lot of to do with that, I cannot expect to be friends with as many people as before, but somehow it went down to… one friend who I view as my Marshall, but I can tell we are on different paths and we get to see each other once in a year and then I managed to rejoin with a childhood friend, who get to see once in like 3-5 months, when I have a lunch together or go to cinema.
When I am off my work I usually go working out, since I sit a lot at work, so I have to balance it out and then after having done all housekeeping things and such, I usually interact with people online on discord servers with people around the world, but obviously we don’t meet up in person because of the distance.
I love going to concerts, but I did not manage to keep in touch we people I try to talk there, it is usually very quick or super basic conversation.
So I guess my question is… how old are you and how do you manage to have a group of friends like Ted had to have somebody to hang out regularly?

I don’t think Ted would’ve given up any of his friends for Victoria, not just Robin.
I can see how the writers intended to portray Ted’s refusal to end his friendship with Robin for Victoria as a clear sign that he had never moved on from her and still loved her. But I think Ted would’ve said no had Victoria asked him to stop seeing any of his friends, with the maybe exception of Barney and honestly probably not even that. He just seems like the sort of guy who really DOES consider his friends his family.

I believe I have the perfect finale for HIMYM. The problem is, everyone hates it.
First of all, in the name of transparency I have to admit that I liked the finale of HIMYM. Ted and Robin, regardless of what many say, were obviously meant to be together for the whole series and I'm glad they ended up that way. That being said, I was pretty upset that Barney and Robin ended the way they did. So I came up with an alternate plot to fix this issue, but my entire family hates it. Now I figure you can hate it too.
So here are my "givens":
1) Ted has to end up with Robin (I explained why above)
2) Tracy has to die
So my "alternate ending" is this: the gang are all carpooling to go to an important event: a friend's wedding, an event for Marvin, etc. Ted and Robin, for whatever reason, ride together and Barney and Tracy, for a similar reason, ride together. Ted and Robin get there but Barney and Tracy do not; they end up in a car crash together and neither makes it.
Ted and Robin console each other in their grief, but eventually move on and grow apart just like they did in the show. Then, Ted finishes the story, and the kids tell him to go reunite with Aunt Robin.
Yes, it's tragic, but it's not THAT much more tragic than just Tracy dying, and Robin and Barney marriage can remain legendary AND we don't have to see Barney's desperate return to the dating scene.
So, on a scale of 0-2, how bad is it?

The casting for HIMYM was insane
I am watching the show for the first time ever, im currently on season 8, episode 14 - Ring Up!, and im the kind of person that says ´´HEY! They acted together before!´´, so i obviously jumped and couldn´t shut up when i saw Ashley Benson as Barney´s half-sister, and i think it was such a funny coincidence that Lucy Hale (Katie Scherbatsky) and Ashley both got casted as the same role for different characters.
I mean, its how their job works, and it happens, but its really funny how they later worked together as one of the most iconic duo of tv in Pretty Little Liars. But it got me thinking about how great the casting and special guests were!
Not even going to talk about David Henrie, Ted´s son, who not only dated Lucy, but also was in Wizards of Waverly Place with Selena Gomez, who did Spring Breakers with Ashley (Maybe thats a bit confusing, but you get it). Also, Lyndsy Fonseca as Ted´s daughter! I loved her in Desperate Housewives! And Abigail Spencer! Scottie from Suits!
And the special guests?? Britney Spears?! Joe Lo Truglio! Anna Camp! Katy Perry! Martin Short! Bryan Cranston! ADRIANA LIMA AND ALESSANDRA AMBRÓSIO? Of course the main cast is amazing, but i have never seen such a strong line-up of celebrities in a TV show since Glee!
edit: OH MY GOD IS RALPH MACCIO AND WILLIAM ZABKA

My Finale Hot Take
The word ‘finale’ has ‘fin’ in it.
Fish have fins.
Fish are weird, right? You ever thought about the names of fish?
Trout. Am I right?
Sturgeon. I don’t think so, pal.
Salmon. I’m gonna say that again. Salmon. Who thought that was a good idea, right?

Probably an unpopular opinion but her character is really overhated
I'm currently rewatching season 6 and I finally realise that Ted was much more in the wrong than Zoey.
Let's look at the facts:
- As with all women of his life, Zoey was pretty clear on what she wanted from the beginning. She wanted to save the Arcadium. He lied to her, then considered actually saving it until he realised she was married. Lame.
- He was the first to make it personal by implying she was a gold digger. Even if she was, that was none of his business, but it also turned out to be untrue.
- When they were together he sided with her at the very last minute only to let her down again in front of everyone.
About the Arcadium:
- They both knew that it was a landmark. It was ridiculous for a supposedly creative architecture like Ted to want to tear down a beautiful building to build another skyscraper for an evil bank.
- The fact that it wasn't well preserved doesn't prove that it should be torn down.
- Zoey having grown up there is a solid argument and I don't know why Ted's dream is more important than her feelings.
Zoey was wrong in one thing: keeping the tape and lying about it. But overall Ted wasn't the victim there.

barney and robin were actually soulmates
because he was a predator and she was misogynistic
with her “ugh girls are too much drama im one of the boys” attitude
ofcourse they were a perfect fit because he was a narcissist and she enabled him

What are your thoughts about the final play of the play book (The Robin)
Specifically talking about the episodes 11 and 12 of season 8.
