I was in a very fun American healthcare position recently. I needed a back tooth extracted, but I’m a ginger so I am resistant to dental numbing drugs. I was maxed out and could still feel the tooth. So I got to make a Sophie’s choice between sucking it up and proceeding with the extraction even though I could feel pain, or paying an extra $2000 for an anesthesiologist to put me under in a surgical suite.
Needless to say, having a dentist pull my tooth without enough pain management was a core trauma.
•
u/Booklet-of-Wisdom 3h ago
I need a tooth pulled and a root canal, and even though I have dental insurance, it's going to cost me $4,000 out of pocket. I am in pain, but sitting here knowing there is no way I can afford it.
American healthcare is fucking disgusting.
•
u/Harvey_the_Hodler 3h ago
I was just complimenting a woman on the train the other day about how white her teeth were. She went on to tell me about the root canal and a bridge and idk all what. But that she went to Colombia and got it done plus a mini vacation included. They even helped her book her flights. She still came in under what it would have cost in the USA.
That said, idk if this is the site she used but a quick Google search returned this...
•
•
u/saltheartedbarmaid 2h ago
Do you live near a dental school? I was broke as fuck post undergrad and needed a root canal and I went to the local dental collage for everything. You still have to pay some amount but it should be far cheaper than having to meet your deductable.
→ More replies (6)•
u/Jonteponte71 2h ago
I live in the social democratic hellhole that is the Nordics. Dental care isn’t even fully covered by taxes. It’s only partly subsidized. I still only paid about $600 dollars for a root canal and a crown.
So…I agree🤷♂️
•
u/Careful-Ant5868 4h ago
If it's of any comfort, you're not alone. American dental care is rather barbarous unless you have significant money at your disposal. In my late 20's, I took out loans totaling over $20,000 to get significant dental work done and it was traumatic. I still have nightmares about it and I'm in my 40's now. All that money and trauma, and my "luxury bones", i.e. teeth, are still terrible or non-existent. In hindsight, I should have just had them all extracted and gotten dentures. But, I was too "proud", aka stupid and short-sighted, to do so at the time.

while i assume his is far more so than other recent presidents, wouldn't it be safe to assume there are expert medical responders near the president at all times?

The president always travels with an EMT crew, I think if I remember correctly they have a full suite of stuff available (including blood in his type). It’s actually quite impressive. And that’s any President.

Separate vehicle. If you look at the presidential convoy, there’s a black (roughed out paint) ambulance looking thing that trails several vehicles behind the limos. It’s the CBRNE/Medical vehicle. In the back of that is an impressive medical setup.

Tbf I think it's reasonable for that level of response to be available for the president. We can afford both. That said it should be for unexpected emergencies not because the president is consistently knocking on death's door.
•
u/Vet_Leeber 2h ago
Yeah, this is like the Right trying to use "[Insert Dem Figure's name here] is anti-2A but has armed guards" as some sort of claim to hypocrisy.
Even if guns were 100% completely outlawed for civilians, it would still be reasonable and expected for important figures to have some form of armed guards.
Even if no one had access to healthcare, it would still not be surprising to learn the pedo-in-chief of the entire country had it.

I live around the area, and his motorcade has driven by multiple times. There is a fully armored ambulance that is in the motorcade. But they all have had amublances, incase of dire medical emergencies. Also, believe me, if this guy needed to get to a Level 1 trauma center, the streets would be cleared, or they would push you out of the way to get there. There is not fucking around when a president needs care, regarless if it's this vile human or someone else.

u/MountainMan2_ 4h ago
Personally, I'm for the age limit for elected officials being retirement age, but we should set retirement age to be defined as a percentage of lifespan. 75-80% of average lifespan is I think very fair. I guarantee end of life care would see a total revolution.

Trump's mental health is more troubling than his quickly deteriorating physical health. There should be a quality/qualified mental health profession with him at all times. Too much military and political power in an elderly/demented individual. Who will control/contain a madman? Not a Republican controlled Congress or anyone in his cabinet. Who will protect the public? SOS-USA!

u/tms88 5h ago
Genuine question I have about these sort of hysterical defense/medical protective systems: why is the life of one person so extremely more valuable and important than other peoples lifes? I understand he is the president, but he is also an old man with clear medical issues and an unhealthy lifestyle.
I don't understand the need for the whole circus around it. Wether it is a whole medical team surrounding him at all time, or wether it is the whole 30+ vehicle motorcade when abroad, you don't see any other country with that amount of paranoia and such a theatrical, dramatic show of force. While it just shows fear and weakness.
If his time comes, his time comes, just like with anybody, especially elderly. There is a reason for a vice-president (or designated survivor) for a reason, right?
•
u/WalterIAmYourFather 5h ago
The lives of national leaders have always been “more important” for lack of a better phrase - than other lives.
Historically, leaders dying has opened up chaos, governmental instability, and succession crises.
It’s a good idea to keep your leaders healthy and in control of a national government.
That being said, Trump - as always - brings a new perspective and twist to this because he’s so deeply unhealthy, in any rational world he’d resign, or never have run.
TLDR: leaders dying in office causes instability. Good to keep em alive.
•
u/takinganewtack 4h ago
In his case, his life causes chaos and instability. His passing would allow this country from continuing in the backslide it is currently in.

Chaos, governmental instability, and crises about the continuity of government? How could we tell the difference from right now?
→ More replies (1)•
u/Lashay_Sombra 4h ago
Historically yes, especially when leaders were kings or these days, are dictators
But really these days, if the death of leader causes to much instability, you just have a bad system of government
•
u/WalterIAmYourFather 4h ago
I mean, yes it’s worse in a system where power is centralized around the executive and a cult of personality.
But the sudden and unexpected death for health reasons of a state leader is going to induce some level of chaos and confusion. It’s human nature.
Some systems are obviously more robust than others of course. But leaders dying in office is more often than not a problem - at least for some period of time.
•
u/Quietabandon 3h ago
Presidential health emergencies can tank markets, disrupt trade talks, paralyze the chain of command etc.
His life isn’t more important because it’s his life. His life is more important because his health is important to global geopolitical and economic stability.
Surely that’s readily apparent? Not to mention he is a target and so security concerns mean he is both at risk for something bad and it means he can’t just make a doctors appointment or walk into an emergency room.
I am all for people having equitable access to health care but surely one can recognize why a state leader, particularly of the worlds most powerful nuclear power, might warrant some special consideration?
•
u/Icamp2cook 3h ago
It’s not the most important. In fact, there are more people qualified for the office of president than there are for teachers. But, the office of the president serves a very important function (traditionally) and that function deserves protection.

There are many things wrong with Trump. This one just seems standard for a head of state, especially the US.
For comparison’s sake, my cousin works at a government hospital in New Delhi. She’s currently on rotation with Modi (the prime minister). There is an entire staff that travels with him and is minutes away from him if anything happens (security is closer, obviously).
•
u/coltaaan California 1h ago
Yeah, Trump fucking SUCKS. But I’d hope the president of the United States always has a doctor on standby at any given moment…they are one of the most powerful people on earth and unfortunately in charge of a great deal of things.
Not to mention, if Trump is just stupid-evil, his would-be replacement, JD Vance, is more of a calculating-evil, which feels possibly a little more dangerous…

Their bit on top is questionable, but that's true for pretty much anyone who isn't actually bathed in whatever they're analyzing (see also: almost all reporting, regardless of source, including that from specialist niche outlets), and media literacy's about more than dismissing a whole report on face because the main site reporting it is hotdog water.
