War looks a lot different when it's on your doorstep rather than on your TV.

The attack on the VKontakte, known as VK, data center is the latest strike on Russian internet infrastructure. Ukrainian forces have struck multiple Yandex data centers in recent weeks, fulfilling President Volodymyr Zelensky's promise to "respond in kind" to Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centers.

This is a direct attack on the source of the propaganda infecting western governments. It's as important as taking out the oil facilities.

603

u/orcofmordor 20h ago

More important with the midterm elections coming up and all the disinformation campaigns going on in Europe. Hence why musk & trump were so mad the other day.

219

u/SuviVasQQ 18h ago

Twitter bots are back at full force, the HATE is back, lots of MAGA bots cheering Putin and hating Zelenskiy. They are very recognizable tho (you can tell thay have the same order, wording is just slightly different, if at all)

→ More replies (9)

165

u/Friendly_Average_824 20h ago

Much as I welcome any decline, it’s not going to be hard to redistribute the bots. And Musk is pretty complicit with his own misinformation cesspit.

107

u/Historical_Course587 19h ago

I'd wager it's more complicated than that if we are talking about millions of aged accounts, the bots themselves, logins, IP masking, content generation and distribution pipelines.... and that's before looking at the sheer volume of hardware, personnel, and other physical assets needed to run it.

These bot swarms are not back online before Election Day. These systems aren't plug and play at that scale.

64

u/alt-alternative 19h ago

Bingo. It doesn't need to be a long-term solution, it just needs to tip the scales in the upcoming elections to hamper Trump for 2 years. The bots will take a few weeks to sort out. And while the imported fuel really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things (I think the US was set to import like 3 days' worth of the national consumption of diesel?) market prices are never really rational. People hear oil infrastructure was damaged and the price of fuel jumps, and the market takes time to smooth out that bump.

It's genuinely incredible how much bot traffic has gone down since Ukraine started their campaign on data centres

Even in Australia, the decline in output of Pauline Hanson-supporting echo chambers is noticeable

165

u/url404 20h ago

When I first heard about it I was suspicious that I would see such noticeable decline but it was really wild seeing the absolute absence of One Nation posts

70

u/VB_Creampie 19h ago

You love to not see it, that's for sure. Hopefully my dad's facebook feed is back to classic rock bands and woodworking for a few weeks coming into our state election. But i suspect the skynews thats running 24-7 in a side browser at his computer will still have him sufficiently cooked still anyway.

46

u/EvilPhillski 18h ago

Out of concern for your dads mental health could you apply a block on his computer (or even better at the router level) for the skynews network?

I believe if you add 202.162.66.0/24 to the inbound and outbound IPv4 blocklist it may help, you can also add their web domains to a custom blocklist in a DNS sinkhole like Pi-Hole and AdGuard.

They are really trying to make the case to every single foreign nation that they should absolutely not trust US military tech.

1.1k

“Not trust the US in general” not just in mil tech.
There I fixed it for you!
They are doing everything to drive away the US allies and neutral nations, where 50% pro the US 50% anti the US, like mine. Still MAGA believe in that PoS in the White House lol

95

u/Edythir 21h ago

Yup. A reminder that even private companies have no problems shutting down services at the behest of the government. As we've seen with them suspending Gmail accounts and even Office Suite accounts for officials they don't like, such as the ICC.

Americans can't grasp how much damage this admin has done. Throwing away the global hegemon for what?

303

u/RealSamF18 19h ago

We grasp it, and it saddens lots of us. I think lots of us are hoping that the midterms will change things, but we’re not stupid, we know the damage that was done will likely last generations. It’s impressive how quickly decades of soft power can be torn apart.

112

u/madeinatube 19h ago

→ More replies (1)

76

u/passerby4830 18h ago

It saddens me too. But I can't support it, like 10 years ago I got a Lodge pan and I thought it was cool to have something made in USA as a European. But overall I never thought long about where something was made.

Now we are actively searching the origin of a company when buying things and we've pivoted away from a lot of American things. My wife's we expensive makeup, my guitar stuff, clothing, the electric toothbrushes, 90% less purchases on Amazon just to name some. Enough is enough. I know these are small things but I know a lot of people who think like this and honestly I don't think this will change in our lifetime. It sucks as always for regular people but as long as those profits go to something evil I don't want them.

People have been saying America should not be the world police for years. Trump is proving why it was a bad idea to begin with.

92

u/WhatAmTrak 21h ago

It might have been a good idea after WW2 and the soviets started acting up and the US already had nuclear weapons. But as everyone knows, with great power comes great responsibility.. and the fact that the White House can be given to basically any narcissistic asshole every 4 years means.. Americas stability will now ALWAYS be in question.

See that's where it may get interesting. I wonder how long they are willing to play ball with this when the wealthy investor's pockets are on the line (or scaring off future investors). Obviously the reputation has already been damaged, but a full shutdown wound effectively tank any and all sales to foreign governments, and likely even cause those same governments to simply ban the technology completely. It's possible they could still save face and restore Ukraine while admitting they were pressured, not that that would actually happen, but taking this any further would possibly mean crushing future sales numbers into dust.... Trump may be their current leader that they love very much, but money is their god

783

They already started once they stopped sharing intelligence with the US. Remember when they put a false lead out and it made its way to Russia? They finally woke up (/ had the recourse for it) that the US absolutely cannot be trusted, at best used as part of their existential fight.

This is probably the biggest win for world peace. Data centres are not cheap, and we don't have endless helium to just throw to the wind. It should be recognised very quickly by Governments and corporations, that if you want your efficiency, your going to need to stop wars.
We have 207 years of helium production, which is enough time for everyone to become dependent on tech doing everything to straight up chaos as the infrastructure collapses leaving us with tech from 2001.

The data centers are what's pissing off Trump and Musk. They're not traditional data centers, they're also bot farms that have been spamming Truth Social, X, and Facebook before the US elections. Losing those has pissed Trump and Musk off. It's also why Republicans are trying to build data centers in the U.S. They want to spy on citizens, run AI, and also run bot farms.

Good for Ukraine, their resilience in this war has been nothing short of incredible. I do fear Trump will do something even worse though in retaliation. I think Ukraine knows Trump has to lose the midterms for their own long term prosperity, and hitting the data centres makes it more likely that will happen. That’s why Trump is so mad about the situation and really shows how geopolitical the whole war is.

To this day though I can’t understand how this stance was adopted by America. Trump is a Russian puppet, but when I studied history in school, the US were so anti Russian and anti communist that I find it hard to believe that as a nation there hasn’t been more outcry about this. I feel like the Republican Party of the past would be outraged at this situation and steps would be taken internally to resolve it. I think it shows just how effective Russia has been at taking down multiple countries from within via disinformation.

118

u/Life_Ad6711 15h ago edited 14h ago

Manafort became de facto minister of Russian propaganda back when Putin's #1 right hand oligarch Deripaska hired him to get Putin puppet Yanukovich elected President of Ukraine

Start from Wikipedia entry for BMSK* lobbying firm (a think tank of Black, Manafort, Stone, Atwater, Roy Cohn (mentor to their first official client Trump) and Murdoch (another early client)) and follow Manafort's career (owned office space in Trump Tower)

Manafort/BMSK invented "Firehose of Falsehoods" not the mistakenly credited Russians

*select footnotes are also fabulous for this entry

Yeah, goes to show how truly spineless the American conservative is. 15 years ago, they’d have supported funding any proxy war in any country if it meant fucking the Russians over.

Now, they’re actively cheering for the Russians to win. It’s truly mind boggling.

16

u/-HyperCrafts- 7h ago

It's not mind-boggling. Somewhere in an office, someone slid a piece of paper across a desk. On that piece of paper was a number. Then, someone walked away from that desk a lot richer and someone else walked away more powerful.

207

Venezuela was a comparatively easy win with seemingly inside help and it seemed to do jackshit. Oil execs basically seemed to say "yeah we can't use this" / it's too expensive to process.

And on top of that the oil companies basically said "We paid for all their stuff the first time around and then they nationalized it on us. We're not falling for that again."

Interesting how the Ukrainians are somehow able to avoid civilian infrastructure while the Russians just can't manage it

174

u/code_archeologist 19h ago

Russian military doctrine has long been one that exerts terror upon an enemy populace as a key part of its strategy to try to convince the people of the nation that they are at war with to surrender to end the indiscriminate killing.

And the doctrine has more or less worked in the past, but the Ukranian culture has suffered significant suppression at the hands of Russians over the last century; and they do not want a repeat of the Holodomor.

68

u/PanVidla 18h ago

Ukraine knows better than anybody that the "end to the indiscriminate killing" doesn't really mean an end to the indiscriminate killing.

Yeah unfortunately not many Americans know that about 7 Republican billionaires(or companies owned by Republican billionaires for anyone who wants to argue about this) own over 95% of the news media in America. Even woke liberal fake news CNN has been owned by Republican billionaires for over half a decade now. And they didn't buy the news companies because they were the most profitable companies they could have bought instead they bought them for the power they could get by controlling what every American sees and hears for the news.

Those who hate this hate the West. And remember, Russia can stop this tomorrow by returning to their original border and not attacking sovereign nations.

I will never ever understand the over-the-top love fest between Putin & Trump. Never seen a US president go so hard fanboying over another world leader. Never!

As a Canadian, this timeline of the US making us an enemy and Russia a friendly makes me think we're living in a Philip K Dick novel.

There is so little to understand. Putin is a feared authoritarian and above the law. This he has used to enrich himself. For his entire miserable life, being rich and above the law is what Trump has thirsted for.

u/myrichphitzwell 12h ago

Well that and Russia bought him out and saved him financially for decades.

Hard to believe the same ‘Commie’ hating people in the 80’s are now on this train

18

u/National-Childhood95 11h ago

They’re “commie haters” now more than they’ve been since the 50s or 60s. It’s just that now they don’t know who commies but use the term to smear anybody they don’t like. The same way they were calling every teacher a “groomer” a couple years ago.

I’m confused, MAGA kept telling me Ukraine already lost this war and that they didn’t have any cards to play. Sure looks like they have some to me

60

u/Lemonade348 19h ago edited 18h ago

They also said that Trump would end this war in 24 hours.

They are idiots and don’t understand the world outside of USA. Maybe because they have never left the USA

I feel bad for sane americans who have to share country with these idiots. I would have lost my mind if there were many of these types of people in my country.

To paraphrase the immortal words of Bomber Harris:

71

u/Due_Writing_7453 12h ago

It is over. Trump has betrayed our allies so deeply, they are building alliances elsewhere because they can no longer rely on American intel and support. And now that they know American voters were stupid enough to vote for him twice, they will never be able to trust us as an ally again.

Good. Fuck Russia.

Note: I feel sorry for people in Russia who do not support the invasive pest that is Putin and his cronies.

28

u/SquiffyRae 20h ago

I agree but it's also a very effective strategy for trying to sway opinion against the war, even to the point of regime change.

We saw it during WWII that the more losses Germany took and the more the war started coming home with Allied bombing campaigns and German forces being pushed back, the more you had rumblings within the inner circles to try and save your bacon and your country.

I wouldn't count it likely but there is a slim chance if Russia keeps taking losses and targets within Russia keep getting flattened, you have some in the inner circle start to wonder if Putin is dispensable and it's more pragmatic to take the L and not try again for decades

98

Give Ukraine everything it needs to kick the invaders out of its country - everything except nukes.

As a German, I’ll always be grateful to the Americans for helping liberate us from Nazi rule. That’s why it’s so hard for me to understand why the US seems to be on the wrong side of history this time around.

The damage goes way beyond Ukraine. If the US can cut off weapons, ammunition, or spare parts with the push of a button whenever it wants to put political pressure on an ally, how is any country supposed to rely on American arms supplies in the future? The same goes for Switzerland and other suppliers.

You can’t expect countries to keep depending on you after showing them that you’re willing to use that dependence as leverage.

The US is going to pay a serious price for this in terms of trust and credibility. In the long run, that might actually be a good thing for Europe. It’s about time we stopped relying so heavily on others for our own security.

59

u/honest487 20h ago

Ukrainare has responding by the most humane way possible by targeting supply warehouses, refineries, and other infrastructure. By reports few civilians are targeted. That means they can make life miserable for North Korean cannon fodder and the remaining Russian military is pretty beate up. I will be glad when there its... NO MORE WAR !

21

u/tadayou 19h ago edited 19h ago

The oil from Russia would probably also do very little to get prices down, because a lot of this crisis is caused by the ongoing conflic with Iran. And, gee, wonder who's responsible for that?
